Deaf in Fiction

Published: Mar 16th, 2012

Below is a video and letter that was sent to us promoting a book of fiction with a Deaf/hard of hearing character (we don’t know if it’s any good!). This raises a couple of interesting questions;

1. How can having Deaf characters in books, films and TV help deaf people in general?

2. What do you think of the way Deaf  and hard of hearing have been shown in the books, films and TV that you have seen? Please leave your comments and ideas below.

Promotional email about this book by the author Elyse Salpeter;Hi there! I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Elyse Salpeter and I’m a writer with Cool Well Press. My new novel called FLYING TO THE LIGHTis a young adult spiritual thriller and was just released digitally and in print on Amazon, Amazon UK, Cool Well Press and B&N NOOK.I wanted to write to you because one of the main characters in the book, six year old Danny Anderson, is deaf. I seldom see the deaf community represented in mainstream fiction novels and I thought you and your followers might be interested in seeing the novel with this little hero and possibly those in the community might wish to purchase it. I was curious if you ever do any write-ups on your site or twitter/facebook pages? I was recently on deafumbrella.com and EUDY’s pages as well. Here’s a recap of the novel:Seventeen year old Michael Anderson and his deaf kid brother, Danny, find themselves in mortal danger after their parents are kidnapped by ruthless biophysicist, Samuel Herrington. Michael discovers Danny has a powerful gift—he knows what happens after a person dies—and now others want to know, too. The brothers must outwit and outrun Herrington, the FBI, and even fellow Americans in a harrowing cross-country chase, because whoever gets to Danny first will have the power to control the fate of every person on earth.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration and happy holidays!

Best regards,
Elyse Salpeter
