Motivating & Inspiring Young Deaf Learners – Project Schedule

deaf learner using a laptop for studyingOur Motivating & Inspiring Young Deaf Learners project is the first of it’s kind – designed to deliver dedicated, one-to-one support to young deaf learners to help them on their way to higher and further education.

Through a committed team of volunteer mentors, we want to make a difference to the young deaf community by providing a strong support network of inspiration and advice. If you’d like to take part as a mentor in our project, please contact project manager, Alasdair today at alasdair.grant@deafunity.org.

Phase 1 – Mentor Training

South Kensington Campus
London SW7 2AZ

These training days will be fully accessible to all participants.

Phase 2 – Information Days for Deaf Learners

deaf learners2In the same vein of our successful Deaf Learner Information Days, phase 2 of the project will consist of 2 regional information days held in Bristol and London. These will provide an opportunity for our mentors to engage with a group of young deaf learners who are about to make their next step in leaving secondary education. They can provide valuable guidance and advice, and dispel many of the myths of studying at further and higher levels. We have run these information days many times over the years and they are an exciting component of this project.

Our Information Days Provide

  • A safe place for deaf learners to ask questions and find out more about studying at university or college.
  • Up to date information about financial assistance and specialist assistance in class and around the university.
  • A chance to meet current and past D/deaf students.
  • The opportunity to join our Motivating and Inspiring Deaf Learners mentor scheme where deaf learners can receive one-to-one support on their journey through higher education and beyond.

Phase 3 – Extended Support

As a climax of our project, 40 young deaf learners will be given extended support beyond the Information Days. They will each be paired with one of our trained mentors to be given focused and continued support throughout their journey to applying and transition to further and higher education.

This support will be made up of the initial Information Day, followed by regular contact through social media, face-to-face and virtual discussions with their mentors. The deaf learners will also benefit from the wealth of resources and information held by Deaf Unity in how to make their move to Further and Higher Education a success.

To be involved in any of these phases, our project manager Alasdair Grant can be contacted on alasdair.grant@deafunity.org. More information shall be made available to those who have registered their interest.
