Please tell us a little about yourself?
Hello everyone, My name is Mohsin Patel and I am a BSL tutor from Bolton.
I have many hobbies but my main hobby is to travel and visit people from different countries. Love helping people.
My other hobbies include football and trying different cuisines.
Over the years I have worked in many BSL related roles and I have been with Deaf Unity for around 5 years.
Also Specialist Mental Health Worker, supporting deaf people with mental health issues, a Public Relations Officer for Deaf Muslim UK (DMUK), and the UK Ambassador for the Global Deaf Muslim Federation (GDMF), the international representative body that represents deaf Muslims at the United Nations. A Public Relations Officer for European Network Deaf Muslim UK (ENDM).
How long have you been teaching British Sign Language?
I have been teaching BSL for around 20 years now.
What do you most enjoy about teaching?
The best thing about teaching is the feeling when students come to their first class and they barely know BSL and as time goes on they develop their understanding and they have gained a new skill they never had before.
The feeling you have as a teacher when this happens is amazing.
What is your favourite topic or level to teach?
My favourite topic is a difficult question because I think all of the topics I enjoy teaching.
What is your number 1 reason people should learn BSL?
I think that people should learn BSL because it really breaks down language barriers and makes it easier to communicate with people who are deaf. Even if this is a situation where you only know basic everyday phrases, this is really helpful.
What is your top tip for current learners?
Enjoy learning BSL and take an interest in the topics and signs you learn. I think it’s really important you network with people and link up with the new learners as well as the wider deaf community in order to have new experiences and opportunity.
