The largest UK medium secure service for deaf men aged between 18 and 65 years old. Fairbairn is a 15 bed ward in purpose-built medium secure servicewhichmanagesdeaf or hearing impaired (profound, severe, partial or hard of hearing) patients’ with complex mental illness in a culturally sensitive environment.
In this role you will be supporting qualified nurses and MDT to deliver exceptional care to our patients. Knowledge and experience of working with this patient group would be an advantage as you will be a role model to your team, demonstrating a flexible, individual and person centred approach. Safety and therapeutic engagement is the key components of our care delivery focus and should be a key demonstrable interest and ability required for this role.
We are looking for Healthcare Assistants on Fairbairn Ward which is a 17-bed ward in purpose-built medium secure service which manages male D/deaf patients’ with complex mental health problems who present a risk of harm to others in a highly specialist D/deaf environment. Fairbairn Ward is nationally commissioned and provides services to D/deaf men from the whole UK and beyond. Fairbairn has excellent links with other specialist D/deaf services and is a leader in the development of specialist D/deaf mental health care. The ward accepts patients with a wide range of diagnosis including mental illness, learning disability, brain injury, autism spectrum disorder, and personality disorder.
In addition to Fairbairn Ward, the service has links to a Northampton based 24-hour supported accommodation placement for D/deaf men with complex mental health and forensic needs who have been discharged to the community. This role has the opportunity to be involved in this service as well as Fairbairn Ward.
Over a third of our nursing team are Deaf and all staff and patients are trained in British Sign Language (BSL) ensuring greater engagement within the unit and participation in therapy. We provide patients with tailored interventions and support them in building relationships with fellow patients to aid recovery and create a sense of belonging.
You may be D/deaf yourself, or have experience of working with D/deaf people, or you may be interested in the unique challenge of working with D/deaf people with mental health problems. You will have skills in BSL or be open to learning BSL. Being a strong team player, you will be able to build and maintain effective relationships across clinical teams. You will have good interpersonal skills with the ability to develop rapport with patients. You will also be highly resilient, able to work under pressure and have good problem solving skills.

St Andrew’s Healthcare has reviewed its approach to COVID vaccination and our procedure remains that for the safety and wellbeing of our patients and staff, all new starters joining the Charity will be required to provide evidence to our Occupational Health team that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Salary: From £19,361 per annum + Enhancements
