We are user researchers working for Kainos on behalf of the Driving Vehicle and Standards Agency (DVSA).
We are looking at ways to improve access for Deaf BSL users when booking the driving theory test. By taking part, you’ll help us to design a theory test booking service that works for BSL users.
British Sign Language (BSL) and other formats
This information is available in BSL at
If you require other formats please contact kelly.arnstein@kainos.com
Who we want to speak to
We want to speak with people whose first language is BSL.
We’d also like to speak with:
· Deaf people who use BSL and are interested in learning to drive
· Deaf people who use BSL who have learned to drive within the last 3-5 years
· Deaf people who use BSL who are interested in learning to drive, but have had problems because of access barriers
What is the research about?
The aim of the session will be to get your feedback on a prototype we are working on which will include a BSL tool called Signly. We want to find out whether these types of technologies would work for BSL speakers who are learning to drive or want to learn to drive.
The sessions:
· are online using Microsoft Teams or Zoom
· will last for 1 hour
You will need access to a computer and a reliable internet connection.
You will receive a £40 online gift card for your time to thank you for your participation.
What will happen during the research session?
We will book a BSL/English interpreter for the session unless you prefer to bring an interpreter.
We will show you a website that has BSL translation and ask you for feedback on how well it works.
We will also talk to you about your experiences of:
• learning to drive (or things that have stopped you learning to drive)
• using BSL online
During the session
• You can choose not to answer a question.
• You can take a break if needed.
• You can change your mind at any time.
• You can stop the session and leave at any time.
In the session there may be other people observing and taking notes, but it will be a 1-1 chat between yourself and me.
How to take part
1. Watch the video to learn about the research : https://youtu.be/CKBm5WLE_Hg?si=aisvSl4jcvcldwyR
If you would like this information in a different format contact kelly.arnstein@kainos.com
2. Please let us know what date and time you would like to take part by contacting kelly.arnstein@kainos.com or barnaby.may@kainos.com
We will send you a questionnaire to fill in. The questionnaire asks:
• Your language and communication preferences
• Questions about you to make sure we are researching with a wide range of people with different experiences.
You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to.
Next steps
After we review the responses, we will invite some people to one-to-one user research sessions that will take place remotely over Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
We will also ask you to fill in a consent form. If you have problems filling in the consent form, we will explain the research again at the start of the interview and ask you to give consent at the beginning of the interview.
If you are one of the participants, we will be in close contact with you to ensure you have all the information and support you need to join the call.
